Captain Fantastic Tom Wraight’s eighty-eighth-minute winner secured Hornchurch’s second win on the road this season, and third win in the league, after beating Enfield Town in the Enterprise National League South on Tuesday night.
An hour before kick-off, Daryl McMahon announced his line-up. He made three changes in the line-up after the Urchins’ last-minute drama, winning 2-1 away to Eastbourne Borough on Saturday, with Charlie Pegrum and Charlie Ruff entering the team starting line-up, which also saw Colombian forward Angelo Balanta making a start, after his late goal in stoppage time in the game.
The game got underway, and within four minutes, Enfield started brighter and piled the pressure on the Urchins as Tosh Gallimore tested Arthur Nasta with a 25-yard strike, but it was saved well. Minutes later, though, three corners came in with quick succession for Hornchurch, two being cleared, with Nathan Bertram-Cooper heading the third, just wide of the goal.
Afterwards, Hornchurch piled the pressure within the majority of the first half, with Tom Wraight firing an opportunity wide from an error at the back from Enfield’s defence and Ruff, McQueen and Balanta all having decent chances but didn’t hit the opening goal frame on the scoreboard.
The last 15 was quiet, but as stoppage time was called, Enfield’s midfielder Sam Youngs fired a shot away, but it was clear from the bar, which was the last chance of the first half.
Half time – Enfield Town 0-0 Hornchurch
The second half got underway, and Darren McQueen struck a chance towards goal within a minute of starting, but was saved comfortably by Rhys Forster. Ex Hornchurch striker Tommy Wood, who joined Enfield Town this summer from Hornchurch, came close to a goal, but fired over the bar, and Josh Rees created space inside the box, but Foster saved well down below to stop the Hornchurch midfielder.
Daryl McMahon made changes on the half-hour mark, with Henry Hearn and Myles Weston replacing Charlie Ruff and Charlie Pegrum. In the sixty-sixth minute, Rhys Foster made an excellent save to deny Nathan Betram-Cooper.
Ten minutes left on the clock and Hornchurch piled the pressure as Tom Wraight saw his shot palmed onto the bar from distance. Still, two minutes from time, delirium came from the away fans as a corner was crossed into the box and found captain Tom Wraight, who fired the ball home past Foster to put Hornchurch into a crucial 1-0 lead away from home.
Seven Minutes were added on, with Hornchurch making two substitutes, which Giles Phillips and Ollie Mulldoon entered the field of play for Darren McQueen and Angelo Balanta. The referee booked Nasta in the dying moments of the game, and that was the time, Hornchurch walking away with the three points once again on their travels, and are facing Farnborough back at the Bridge next this Saturday, hopefully see you there!
